Rushed into emergency open-heart surgery after an on-set heart attack, Yehia is put through a fantasy trial in a courtroom situated in his rib cage (a rather theatrical-looking contraption of white sheets draped over wooden ribs) as he flashes back on his life. Chahine embraces the absurdity of the silly device with fanciful fun (his inner child rebels against the stodgy grownup by crawling through his veins and undoing the surgery) but it’s the flashbacks that carry the film’s power. Think of it as Chahine’s IAll That Jazz/I, only less flashy and more thoughtful. The young director struggles within the industry, sacrificing his vision and his politics in commercial compromises, sacrificing his family for his art, still dreaming of Hollywood while toiling in the low-budget environs of Egypt.PFans of Chahine will recognize startling re-creations of two of his most famous films, ICairo Station/I and IThe Sparrow/I, but you don’t need to know his work to feel the strain of his conflicts. In fact, the landmark series, which debuted in 1976 on ABC, quickly gained a following for its willingness to integrate controversy with a fairly typical upper-middle-class family. The Lawrences–headed by Sada Thompson as Kate and James Broderick (father of Matthew Broderick) as Doug–were close-knit but willing to face issus like infidelity, gay friends, alcoholism, divorce, and more–making it ground-breaking for primetime TV. The kids (divorcee Nancy, played in season 1 by Elayne Heilveil and replaced in season 2 by Meredith Baxter Birney; Willie, played by Gary Frank; and the heartbreakingly adorable Buddy, played by Kristy McNichol) knew they had mom and dad’s support, even when the going got tough, and were there for each other when crises arose. And happily, the show’s producers, which included Mike Nichols and Aaron Spelling, realized all this earnestness needed leavening with some humor. When Buddy is needling Willie for dance lessons so she can go to the Junior Jump with the babelicious Carl (”Hey, the Strawberry Shakes are playing!”), Willie balks. Then Buddy looks him square in the eye and says, “I need a personal triumph, Willie.” She shoots, she scores. The show, which won Emmys for both Thompson and McNichol, boasts stellar writing and believable situations, and is still compulsive watchable years later. The catch of the day is “Spookyfish,” a comedy creepfest about a killer fish, possessed animals, and alien alter egos presented in Spookyvision (with pictures of Barbra Streisand framing the screen). “Korn’s Groovy Pirate Ghost Mystery” is a dead-on IScooby-Doo/I parody. Stan, Kyle, Cartman, and Kenny are also haunted by “Underpants Gnomes” and an alien “Trapper Keeper,” although the subplots of these two episodes offer, in the words of one character, “more fertile territory” for ISouth Park/I’s skewed social commentary. In “Underpants Gnomes,” corporate takeover by an invading Harbucks Coffee threatens a local family business. “Trapper Keeper,” especially, is a hilarious response to the botched 2000 U.S. presidential race, as an undecided student, Flora (natch), sends an election for kindergarten class president into chaos that will somehow involve (shudder!) Sports physician Marcus (Kevin Costner, sporting a ludicrously big mustache) coaxes his flaky brother David (David Marshall Grant) into doing something with his life and training for a gruling bike race in the Colorado Rockies. The scenario is complicated, though, by family frictions and the fact that the brothers’ dad died of a cerebral aneurysm that has been handed down to one of the brothers. The two train rigorously for the big event (part of their routine involves outrunning an angry pit bull every day), then pack the van and head West. Marcus’s girlfriend is also the ex-wife of his main rival in the race circuit, providing a bit more intrigu. Veteran action director John Badham (ISaturday Night Fever/I, IWar Games/I) excels during the bike-race segments, capturing the breathtaking scenery and the demanding nature of the event nicely. The film is somewhat hobbled, though, by the screenplay and character development; the film plays a bit too much to the sports-movie cliche and the dysfunctional-family story seems like a lengthy prologu to the race. Also, try not to be too bothered by the annoyingly dated soundtrack, and this should be a fairly entertaining, unpretentious little film. I–Jerry Renshaw/IbrbrSounds like a great movie, doesn’t it?
